How to wash your merino wool scarf

Merino wool naturally resists odours: its fibres manage moisture and trap odour molecules, which limits the growth of bacteria. Rather than washing your scarf, we simply recommend airing it out. After 24 to 48 hours, it will be fresh again.

Wash it as rarely as possible. Our scarves are woven from a very fine, untreated merino wool, which gives them their lightness and softness. Like all natural wool, it can felt when exposed to water, heat and friction, and this effect builds up from one wash to the next.

If an accident does happen, such as a spilled coffee, here is how to proceed.

Hand washing (recommended)

1. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water (30 °C / 86 °F maximum) and add a wool wash. We recommend EUCALAN products, designed to protect wool and delicate fabrics.
2. Immerse the scarf and gently press it a few times so the water soaks in. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not rub.
3. If you rinse, use water at the same temperature as the wash, since a sudden change in temperature causes the fibres to shrink.
4. Press the scarf between your hands to remove the water, never wringing it, then roll it up in a towel.

Machine washing (only if your washer allows it)

Use a washing machine only if it has a wool cycle suited to hand-wash woollens, ideally Woolmark certified (look for the ball of yarn logo on the machine or in its manual). In that case:

1. Place the scarf in a mesh laundry bag.
2. Use a wool wash, such as EUCALAN.
3. Select the “Wool” or “Hand Wash” cycle, in cold water (30 °C / 86 °F maximum), with the lowest possible spin speed. Never use the “Delicate” cycle.
4. Remove the scarf as soon as the cycle ends.

Even with these precautions, a machine agitates wool more than hand washing does. If you wash your scarf often, hand washing is the better choice.

Drying

Lay the scarf flat on a towel, away from any heat source, and gently reshape it to its original size while it is still damp.

Always avoid: hot water, the dryer, fabric softener, bleach, regular laundry detergent and drying on a radiator.
